After the conquest the Spaniards arrived to Cihuatlán bay and found only women. When they asked where the men and boys where, they were told that Cihuatlán was a matriarchy that was visited twice a year by the men. If a boy was born in Cihuatlán, it was sent out to be raised outside of the matriarchy by the fathers and family. The Spaniards laughed, and added a negative Spanish diminutive "nejo". Cihuatlán - the land of women, thus became Zihuatanejo - the land of women of no significance or no importance.
| I have lived in Zihuatanejo for over 35 years, and was chosen to be a vehicle to bring my three daughters here in Cihuatlán. Wanting to leave a legend for my 3 daughters, Sirena Justine, Maya Savanah and Ana Isabel, I began a collection of 4 Women and Goddesses of México. I purchased the first four sculpted pieces that Arturo Macías carved. It has grown through the years and pays a great respect to many of the greatest women, and goddesses of the country of México. | Arturo Macías has been deemed by Art Alliance in New York City to be one of the three most important sculptors in the world.
